this is my first impression of the chinese local when i came upon this land some 8 months ago. this is so because back in singapore, we would address each other by (first) names only but here in china, friends would call out to each other names in full (last+first names). to a singaporean chinese, if someone were to call you that way, it's probably something bad that you have done :P

have not had the time to dig out the reason behind this observation and a chance arises when we were required to do a mini assignment for the cultural linguistics module. hence i used the chance to dig out some materials from the internet to get some preliminary observations. here's the report (written in Chinese) that i handed up 2+ weeks ago.

if you are a ?????reading this post, it may interest you, though be minded that the findings are very preliminary, and further research using sociolinguistics methods with large samples is needed to uncover more about the phenomenon.

today marks the last day of my first semester in fudan and this is my final installment for the series of (feels like never-ending) examinable essays:

Title: ???????????????

(in English): A sociolinguistics study of youths and Chinese language in Singapore

Synopsis:
This paper presents a sociolinguistics study conducted with 56 youths who have studied Chinese Language (CL) during their secondary/junior college days in Singapore and have since left and 'graduated' from the CL classroom. Two primary research questions drove this study:

1. Is there any change in the youths' proficiency level of CL after leaving the CL classroom?
2. How are the youths using CL after graduating from secondary schools/junior colleges?

Three secondary research questions were explored to provide input to the two pri qns.
Data collection was conducted through the administering of an online survey.

and to make this assignment INTERESTING, i have also put together a video demonstration on how the IWB lessons can be carried out. the voice/volume of the recording's not too good coz my TC1100's mic is really that lousy. choose among [Online viewing of streamed video] or [download to desktop for offline viewing, abt 20MB]

how is grammar to be taught with composition writing? is there any relationship between a good piece of writing and it's grammar, aside from the simple phrase 'grammatical error free', which translates into compliance with grammatical rule. what i'm exploring in this essay is beyond the 'compliance' issue, how does renowned writers managed grammar in their writings (knowingly or unknowingly) so that it makes a good piece of literary work? did not manage to come out with much conclusions in this round of exploration coz the issue turned up to be too complex for a simple analysis of two pieces of writing to produce any recommendations.

and here's it, the latest installment for my series of assignments:
