50+ Web 2.0 Ways To Tell a Story

| | Comments (0)

if you're an EL/CL/ML/TL/any other language teacher and seeking ideas to "web2.0" your language classrooms, check out this resource put together by Alan Levine. the idea's not too difficult:

  1. Outline a Story Idea
  2. Find Some Media
  3. Pick a Tool to Build Your Story

change the tool as often as you like and you can plan unlimited ways (use a different story prompt, coupled with different media, and when more and more tools' made available) of getting students to tell/write stories the whole year round (:

if you need an example of how it can be done, take a look at Alan's 50+ Ways to Tell the Dominoe Story.

enjoy (:

Encouraging Web 2.0 "conversion"

chanced upon this initiative termed "23 Learning 2.0 Things" which is a nicely laid out 9-week programme. might give some ideas on how one can encourage fellow teachers to become 2.0ed. if you're able to throw in some incentives, that would definitely be nice. otherwise the process in itself can be fun i suppose (:

Footprints ...

| | Comments (2)

The title of Will Richardson's latest article on ASCD reads "Footprints in the Digital Age" (first saw this article mentioned in Anne Davis's post. Thanks Anne for highlighting the article). As I read through the online article, the following sentences resonated:

  • (As) a consequence of the new Web 2.0, ... (we) are becoming increasingly woven into the fabric of almost every aspect of our lives.
  • ... like it or not, social Web technologies are having a huge influence on students ..., even the youngest ones.
  • ... like it or not, social Web technologies are having a huge influence on students ..., even the youngest ones.
  • One of the biggest challenges educators face right now is figuring out how to help students create, navigate ... the Web and helping them do this effectively, ethically, and safely.
  • The things we create are searchable to an extent never before imagined and will be viewed by all sorts of audiences, both intended and unintended.

And the recurring theme on the importance of teachers' leading/scaffolding appears in the following sentences:

  • ... we may find opportunities to empower students to learn deeply and continually in ways that we could scarcely have imagined just a decade ago
  • ... they're doing all sorts of things with online tools that, for the most part, we're not teaching them anything about.
  • Our teachers have to be colearners in this process, modeling their own use ... and understanding the practical pedagogical implications ... technologies and online social learning spaces.
  • (educators should learn that) transparency fosters connections and ... (willing) to share our work and, to some extent, our personal lives.
  • ... still needs the guidance of teachers and adults who know them in their own practice.
  • ... students have the potential to own their own learning—and we have to help them seize that potential.
  • Younger students need to see their teachers engaging ...
  • Middle school students should be engaged in the process of cooperating and collaborating with others ..., just as they have seen their teachers do.

And the ending paragraph reminds us to be a lifelong learner in ICT if we were to teach and prepare our students for their future lives:

"But to do all that, we educators must first own these technologies and be able to take advantage of these networked learning spaces."

these 3 happened to turn up in the related slideshows column while browsing the slides for blogtalk 2008, capture them here for future reference:

WikiMatrix provides two choices:

1. A direct "Select-and-compare" mode which allows you to choose and compare features of some 99 wiki sites online. The comparison is very comprehensive, which includes General Features, Hosting Features, System Reqiurements, Datastorage, Security/Anti-Spam, Development/Support, Common Features, Special Features, Links, Syntax Features, Usability, Statistics, Output, Media and Files and Syntax Examples.

2. Use the "Wiki Choice Wizard" engine which will ask you a few questions and generate a recommended list of wiki sites for reference. The questions asked what features do you need, which include "History", "What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG)", "Software or hosted?", "Your own Domain?", "Corporate Branding", "Storage System?", "Free and Open Source?", "Programming language?".

a very useful reference to have imho :)

Have you internet-searched for your own name lately?

have not been following up with Pew/Internet's excellent series of research lately until i saw this in /. today that reminds me of its existence.

this issue entitled "Digital Footprints" released on 16 Dec 07 looks into how people looked at personal identities in the internet, and how development of Web 2.0 has changed pple's perception of things. believe this 50-pages report would be insightful, will find time to look at it after i have completed the killing examinable assignments *arghh*

A Vision of Students Today - a video

| | Comments (0)

First came across this from Wesley Fryer's post, this video was produced by a working group of Kansas State University students and faculty dedicated to exploring and extending the possibilities of digital ethnography led by Asst Prof Michael Wesch.

This video calls for us teachers to reflect upon what our students are learning/doing in class when we are 'teaching n preparing them for tomorrow'. Enjoy n reflect :)

Collaborative Online Mind Mapping

saw this post off will richardson's blog, and am attracted to it as i'm also a mindmap fan myself. MindMeister is the tool which Will has reviewed in his post. the free version allows up to 6 maps to be created, and a fee is required for unlimited map creations and export functions. just to note down that IHMC CmapTools is also a concept-mapping tool (not entirely equal to mind-mapping) and it also allows realtime online collaboration, something which i recalled we experimented when we did our 13th TecXplorers Gathering.

Webslides (beta, patent pending)

webslides allows one to turn bookmarks and feeds into interactive slideshows by converting bookmarks, RSS feeds, blogs to slideshows in minutes. pretty cool tool, have not experienced the creation process myself, but you can also take a look at some of the samples available on the page.

saw that it is "patent-pending", so does it mean that it'll not be a FREE tool soon *hmm*
